What
can you tell from handwriting analysis?
Scientific graphology, commonly known as handwriting
analysis, falls under the rubric of individual psychology. Essentially,
graphology is a constant reflection of who you are at the time
of the writing. The skilled analyst is capable of detecting various
behaviors, propensities, aptitudes, self-image, insecurities
and defenses or escapes, drives and motivations and a multitude
of very specific personality traits.
Scientifically,
graphology is described as the study of movement, in the process
of writing, which projects the personality of the writer and
is consistent with other projective techniques used in psychological
assessments, such as “Draw a Person, Draw a Tree” or
Kinetic Drawing Testing and Dance Therapy Interpretations (superficially
referred to as body language).

How
accurate is it?
Any measure of personality is subject to inaccuracy.
It is a social science in which there is no absolute. Handwriting
analysis as an indicator of personality and behavior is 80-90%
accurate according to the studies conducted by the Institute
of Graphoanalysis in Chicago. Our own research studies and the
feedback from our clients, accumulated for more than 20 years,
are congruent with these statistics.

What
about the person who only prints?
Printing consists of predominately down strokes, which
are consciously controlled. In much the same way as tapping on
the knee can cause an upward reflex, upward strokes in handwriting
determine subconscious reflexes of the personality. To prove
this to yourself, write a word twice in pencil. With one, retrace
your strokes and erase the upstrokes so that only down-strokes
exist. On the second word, erase only the downstrokes. (The one
with just down-strokes remaining still reveals the word while
the one with just upstrokes makes no sense whatsoever. (Examples)
All of the
studies done on subconscious activity have demonstrated that
the subconscious is total chaos (which is why our dreams are
so abstract). It is only in consciousness that we can make
sense out of things. Other studies show that we only utilize
about 10% of our brain on a conscious level; most of our behavior
is generated from subconscious activity. Printing is consciously
controlled behavior and generally indicates an individual who
needs to be in control and is uncomfortable with unpredictable
situations.

What
if the person doesn't write at all?
Because handwriting analysis works by analyzing movement,
it does not matter what the strokes are that are placed on the
paper. A small child's scribbles reveal a great deal about his
personality. If the person is able to make marks on paper, those
marks can be analyzed and will determine specific characteristics
(limited by the nature and extent of the marks) of the personality
of the individual.

Doesn't
the handwriting change depending on how the person feels?
How a person feels may be reflecting a particular attitude
and yes, the handwriting will reflect changes in attitude. At
the same time, the basic structure of the personality is unlikely
to change without a significant cause (usually a trauma). For
example, a person may decide during a term in prison that his
lifestyle has been wrong; he revises his attitude, accepts a
new belief and continues his life out of prison serving mankind.
Some people may view this as a changed person, but the truth
is that only his philosophy changed, not his personality: he
still has the same drive, way of processing information and responsiveness
to emotional stimuli as he had before. He simply made a conscious
decision to channel his personality differently.

I
have several different styles of handwriting; what does that
mean?
The basic structure of the handwriting does not change
no matter how many styles you have. What appears to the layman
to be different will not appear so to the expert because of the
measuring techniques used in the process of the analyses. Varying
styles of writing may represent a creative personality, which
is likely to reflect moodiness as the person changes from one
style to another. To what degree the moodiness will affect the
writer or other people requires analyses and comparison of the
styles of writing.

What
about the way a person is taught to write?
No one can write exactly as they are taught, but some
people can achieve a close resemblance and maintain it. The individual,
who cannot conform to the standards of penmanship he was taught
is usually a nonconformist or an individualist, having formed
his personality early in life. Individuals who find it easy to
follow the penmanship standards are generally conforming in nature
and find security in maintaining what is perceived to be socially
acceptable behavior
